What is the one thing Americans should know about how to make a proper cup of coffee?
Paul, someone has hijacked your account and is asking about coffee.
No, that was actually me! Things change.
Maybe a better question is: where in the world does your favorite coffee come from? I bought some Ugandan roast two days ago in honor of this man. Fantastic.
The quality of your coffee is heavily dependent upon the quality of the water that you use. Fresh roasted coffee beans are essential to a superb cup of coffee.
Beyond the quality water and beans, how the beans are roasted can greatly affect things. A great way to learn more about roasting is to do it yourself. I roast my own using an old air popcorn popper, the easiest and cheapest way to get started.
Roasting your own coffee beans in your popcorn popper? THAT is commitment!
Jason - that's awesome. How long do you roast them? How do you tell when they're ready? And where do you buy your beans?
It all depends on what you want your cup of coffee to taste like. The same bean will bear different flavor profiles depending on how light/dark you roast the coffee. I usually roast Costa Rican coffee to the second crack...about 450 degrees fahrenheit.
You can get green beans all over the internet, and in Seattle we have some coffee shops/roasters that will sell their green beans. Even Costco sells their green beans in a 30lb box!
A good place to start is www.sweetmarias.com
Let me know how it turns out for you if you give it a whirl!
Never put your beans in the freezer.
Sitting down and taking the time to fully enjoy it! (not running around town w/ coffee cups)
