We are going to be staying in Westport, WA at Vacations by the Sea. Any tips for those vacationing with kids? Also, we have heard that you can go clamming on the beaches there. Is this correct? Are the clams edible?

You can, and the clams are more then edible - razor clams are delicious! Particularly good for making chowder. My parents used to take me clamming there when I was a kid - I have great memories of the place. Get yourself a "clam gun" - basically an aluminum tube with handles that you use to core the sand. Razor clams move fast - you can dig them with a shovel, but often you wind up chopping them in half.

One thing to be aware of: the season is typically pretty short I believe, so you should check the local regulations. The clams were almost wiped out by disease about ten or fifteen years ago. They've made a comeback, but you have to get a license, wear it visibly outside your jacket, all of that. Fish and Game monitors the fishery very carefully (as they should).

Thanks Paul, that's really helpful. I used to go clamming in Parksville as a kid and had such a blast, but these days I think that the clams are now not edible. i was hoping you could do this in Westport as we are taking our two young kids. Good to know about the licensing, will check in on this when we arrive as well as the season.
