The Internet and social media is making its impact in Cambodian schools: http://seayouthsayso.com/internet-social-media-schools-cambodia
Really encouraging to know that Facebook is actually being put to good use in some places. Too often all we read about are its latest steps to please advertisers, such as this one: http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/13/facebook-expecting-baby/
Something I'm curious about is Internet penetration and bandwidth speeds in places like Cambodia. Do most households have a computer at home or are people typically accessing the Internet at university and school etc? Also, what kind of Internet connections do they have?
I am guessing in Singapore you have at least as fast bandwidth as the US if not faster. How do the companies charge for it? Here in the US it's actually quite cheap - about $50 USD per month for unlimited use.
From what I've heard from my Cambodian friends, Internet penetration is still not that high in Cambodia, and connectivity is an issue in many parts of the country. Also, many young people are still not harnessing the power of new media for civic engagement, which is why the initiative Loy9 (http://seayouthsayso.com/be-active-be-loy9) is so interesting there, trying to get more young people engaged and involved.
For Singapore, though, we're extremely connected. I recently saw somewhere that our smartphone penetration is well over 90% (perhaps around 94%? I don't recall the exact number).
I just got a new fibre optic broadband connection yesterday, it's about SGD59 a month (less than US$50) and goes up to 100mbps.
WOW - > 90% smartphone penetration. Here in the US, it just reached 50%: http://gigaom.com/mobile/carrier-data-confirms-it-half-of-us-now-owns-a-smartphone/
So, given that Singapore society is so well connected, are you seeing a lot of high-tech innovation and entrepreneurialism too? Curious how people are taking advantage of such high levels of mobile connectivity. Any notable companies or services that we probably don't yet know about here?
Yes, it's quite crazy in Singapore. When you're on a bus or on the train you can see everyone obsessed with their phones.
