Hi Jennifer. I don't live in Italy but my wife is Italian so she spends a lot of time there. Its difficult to recommend one place as there are so many amazing places to visit. If you're going for a week and are looking at an urban holiday I would probably recommend Rome (cliche I know). There is more than enough to do to keep you busy and its possible to take day trips out of the city to the beach, to archaeological sites and the like. I would recommend you avoid high summer though as its gets too hot and too busy. If you were planning to go then probably somewhere further north might be better. You could, for example, spend a couple of days in Bologna - the food capital of Italy - and spend a day or two travelling to Venice, Padua and other towns and cities that are not too far away.
