Is Aurora Australis common in New Zealand?

I don't think so -- we've been in Auckland for 18 months and I've never seen the Southern Lights. If you lived in Invercargill (much further south) you might have a better chance of seeing them but even then I think they're something of a rarity here.

the aurora australis (or the southern lights), has almost identical features to the aurora borealis and changes simultaneously with changes in the northern auroral zone[7] and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, New Zealand, and Australia.
