Is following a religion really necessary?

It's an interesting question. You know, I've never been in any religion but have always been fascinated with religions around the world. I think it comes from this fear that I've had of not knowing what happens after death, ever since I was a child.

I was raised by a Protestant Christian mother and a Jewish father, neither of whom actively practiced their religion. They both believed that the central tenet of any major religion is to be a good person and help others, or at the very least don't harm them, and they chose to raise me with that in mind, but completely secularly. I don't believe that following any religion is necessary, or that you need religion to be a good person. All people are capable of being good and helping others, and religion often ends up creating conflict instead of peace (i.e. Protestants vs. Catholics in Northern Ireland, Muslims vs. Jews in the Middle East, etc). I consider myself to be a spiritual agnostic, and believe that some sort of "higher power" exists, though not a "god" in the typical Jewish/Christian/Muslim monotheistic sense. I also have no idea what happens after death, and accept that I will never know until it happens, so it is pointless to worry about.

the good thing about most religions is that it gives one a moral compass to guide people through whatever life brings one's way....and almost all religions do share most moral ideals for living. how deep one gets into their faith is up to the person.

It's good for some people. I think if no religions existed today a lone man on an island with no contact with other humans would still formulate a concept of God.

@jamesR : That makes sense. The followers should be tolerant towards other religions and co-exist peacefully.

@cajunmark : Religion should be explained logically and people should be allowed to question rather than just blindly imparting it.

Interesting comments on religion. I, too, am troubled by blind adherence to religious philosophy that does not allow tolerance for other viewpoints. There are many ways to look at the world depending on one's personal experience and I think being human allows for that variance.

All the religions must be respected, I'm atheist but I respect the others choice....never force to people to join or make to think that your religion is the best :)

Personally I think religion is not necessary. But many peoples say that: religion makes me feel good and happy......that's good... I think the more important is to live with or without, the best choice is to live a good life and respect ever

Isso o que ele disse aí embaixo, é bom que as pessoas sigam a religião porque parte da doutrina dela impõe respeito ao próximo e entre outras coisas que geram boa convivência, Não acredito, mas respeito

no way! religion is just a way to concentrate your mind and energy. there are other things that can help.
