Bitter cold and blowing snow yesterday (1-14-13). Our horses played and galloped around from time to time, which helps them warm up. We also make certain they have all the hay they can eat during harsh weather. We have several run-in sheds where they can go to get out of the weather, but they usually prefer to stay out in the open, where they can keep an eye out for predators. Our Great Pyrenees dogs will protect them, but the horses don't take chances. Here in the mountains, the main predators are mountain lions, coyotes and dog packs. In the fall, if the bears are in poor condition (for example when the oaks fail to set acorns), they also can become dangerous. One of our mares needs a blanket in harsh weather because for reasons unknown to us, she gets cold easily. Yesterday morning we put her in the barn for awhile to warm up, which she protested noisily at first. None of our horses like to locked up.
It sounds cold but beautiful! I live in the Midwest and I actually had a mountain lion in my yard in town! Your photography and home are lovely!
Jaclynjo, it must have been unnerving to find a mountain lion in your back yard. However, on the plus side, I hear that mountain lion steak is delicious! We deal with the local lions by letting our Great Pyrenees dogs chase them off, as I am not into meat hunting, so to speak.
Anyhow, thank you for the compliment.
Yes it was! Originally I thought that there was a man crawling across my yard, and then under my porch!!! It was in the middle of the night, about 1 am I think, and I was sitting on my porch when I heard/saw it....then the next day my neighbor came over and told me that it was in the woods behind our houses and had been roaming around our area for a day or two. We lived just on the edge of the city and wild turkeys roamed about our backyard quite often, so it makes sense!!! Also, your photography truly is beautiful and I would love to have a link if you have it all on flickr or photobucket or online somewhere so I can see them all!!! Thanks again for sharing!
I hope the wild turkeys compensate for putting up with that mountain lion!
