In Seattle, at the first sign of snow, they close them down. Kind of crazy considering we get snow almost every year in the city. I blame it on the California people that moved up here who don't know how to drive in the snow. Haha ;-)

Well, I'm in the snow belt of NE Ohio. As for cold, I'd say less than 10 degrees and the little ones get the day off. Or a good dump of snow in the middle of the night where the plows don't have time to get through.

I study in Jerusalem, which usually gets some snow flakes once a year, it barely sticks. Sometimes there are a few inches in the shade. A few weeks ago they canceled the later classes one day because of a little hail/snow stuff that wasn't even sticking. I've lived in NJ which can have snow through the winter and barely any snow days, so I was laughing. Next morning though, I woke up to about a foot of snow, which probably hasn't happened in Jerusalem for a decade! Obviously there weren't classes that day and the public transportation was down for most of the day. It was nuts...

Up in Canada, in Vancouver they close if snow is more than a couple inches or so, the reason being that people just can't drive. Elsewhere in Canada, it has to get really really cold (below -15 or -20Fh) for that to happen... I assume the same applies to northern cities in the US other than the coats where weather is milder in general.

Here in Estonia (located in the North Europe) schools will be closed, when temperature drops below -19°C (or -2°F) for grades 1-6 and -24°C (or -11°F) for grades 7-9. For a high school pupils there are no cold Sundays. Snowing is not a reason for closing schools, unless conditions are extreme.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a documentary, which showed how in Siberia about 10 years old children went to school in -50°C (or -58°F) cold weather. Schools are closed there, when temperature drops below -54°C (or -65°F).

Schools tend to stay open in Ottawa during inclement weather, but the school buses are often cancelled when road conditions are bad, for obvious reasons. Buses might get cancelled several times a year due to freezing rain or even just heavy snow. If windchill is forecasted to be -25°C (-13F°) or colder, students will generally be kept inside during recess and lunch times and buses may be cancelled in some areas. Rural areas tend to have more frequent bus route cancellations, partially because children tend to wait outside longer in unsheltered areas.

Hi (Kia Ora) dhaynes, in New Zealand we usually lose between 2-5 days due to snow. Even though we have snow each year we don't salt our roads like you do. We close down and hunker in for the duration.!!
