What is the first thing you think about when you here the word Colombia and why?
I think about the flag and then I think about when a soccer player was murdered in 1994 after scoring an own goal at the U.S. World Cup of 1994. His last name was Escobar.

Unfortunately, I think most people in the US would say "drug catels" obviously. Would LOVE to have you place some more positive impressions to us!
Yes definitely! Well we only hear the bad news about other countries here in the U.S. On a positive note Colombia has great music!
I could say a million good things about my country but the truth is that yea we still have some issues but it comes with the history...things have change a lot and continue to change for the better I lived in the states for some 10 years and came about 4 years ago and I love it, no regrets at all. here is a little video about Colombia hope you like it and i hope you can get a chance to see it for your self. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rOOFnrdEX8 much love.
Wow, Alejo. That video is beautiful. Thanks for sending.
Glad you liked it always happy to show a different side of my country
Seems to me that Colombia has turned the corner. I read this article recently about hip-hop being used to teach kids.
I think of dense forests, rolling countryside, and lots of animals and plants.
I was frightened before (drug cartels! kidnappings! more drug cartels!), but now I wonder if I'm being ridiculous. Colombia looks beautiful, and I'd love to visit its cities, coasts, and jungles!
mujeres hermosas!
coca
Falcao!!!
SALSA!!! PORQUE ME ENCANTA!!!
Unfortunately, the murdering of trade unionists.
At first, coffee. I love coffee from Columbia!
I also think about a girl I knew in college from Columbia. She was super sweet, had a strong faith in Jesus, and was always joyful.
Well you know the bad news is that cocaine and civil war are among the first things. I should know more, I had a classmate who’s dad was from Colombia, but I never discussed Colombia with here. And I have read an article by the Colombian Ambassador of Sweden complaining about the way his country was presented in Swedish media.
hey everyone Im loving all the feed back and i just want to take the time to say that yes Colombia is a lot of things...we still have many problems to solve but we live with hope, there is more good here then bad...but you know that sex, drugs and violence sells...so I just want to say that if you ever find your self in Colombia specially in Medellin let me know...this is a country full of wonders...any ways keep letting me know what you think.
Well, apart from the obvious thing, what I think about is the city of Cartagena, which I would like to visit one day.
Coffee!
I want to shear this quick article about Medellin...it has a whole lot of truth and even more hope...hope you like it and let me know what you think about it. http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2004/07/04/good-times-in-medellin.html
I read the article that you posted about Medellin, and it gives an impression of great hope. I am wondering where the money comes from to support the new projects and infrastructure. Have foreign companies become involved at all? What do you see as the best means of fighting the drug cartels?
the majority of the funding come from the government...there is of course companies that contribute with money and other activities but it mostly comes from the gov. with this in mind i'll like to point out that the local and regional government have a lot of action within the business sector, also there have been more foreign companies coming in im sure they have some kind of social interest as they establish good will but im not to o sure what they are doing...in my opinion the best way to fight the cartels is providing good education for the low income families and opportunity for people to earn an honest days work.
Paso Finos
Space Shuttle... unfortunately...
I think you mean space shuttle Columbia...im talking about the country Colombia two totally different things.
Yes, but that's the first thing that came to mind... (and I must say I didn't realize the difference in spelling, sorry). Thinking about the country I'm afraid "cocaine" is the first thing that comes to mind.
Im just being honest here, not trying to be rude or anything. I'm sure that when I would ask people the same thing about The Netherlands most people would answer windmills, wooden shoes, cheese and drugs. That's just how people minds work.Prejudice is all over the place and the only thing you can do is to realize that and try to find out more about what's really going on in a country/region/culture.
hahaha its cool I understand, I just wanted to make sure that the topic was made clear.
I totally understand what you are saying and I can see why people would associate Colombia with cocaine, any ways, its true what you say about the prejudice that every place has...but its a good thing that a place like Harnu is here and we can talk about such issues.
Co-workers, beautiful spanish accent! aguardiente!! fruits! papitas margarita

Hello AlejoMontoya! I think immediately of Columbian writer/thinker Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but grateful that he has left us the legacy of his words. Such an inspired storyteller. My favorite piece of his writing is his short story, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," which I first read in high school AP English class. It has always stayed with me.
Beautiful women.
When I was a child all I thought of was cocaine. They beat that down our throats, in the 1980's with shows like Miami Vice and their Colombian drug lords. Now I think more about the leftist battle, the Sandinista's, the struggles for freedom, and how much exploitation of your country has occurred at the hands corporation backed governments.
Beset by, haunted by, drugs. In some ways, backwards. But I'm sure, an otherwise beautiful place.
Medellin! I loved visiting there. And La Ceja and Rio Negro, my second homes.
sorry, most people in my contry now about Columbia only drugs =(
