I am going to a trip to New Zealand October - December. I now, that the whole is amazing, but we only have 3 weeks on the southern and 4 weeks on the northern island, so I need to check a little. Is there something MUST MUST MUST See or does anybody has very good ideas? We are with two kids (3+6 years)... #travel

Hi Reena,

I've lived in NZ for about a year and there's lots to see. You will have an amazing time as NZ is just beautiful. I don't know how you will travel from place to place but if you travel with kids a camper van is probably the most convenient. I start with some of my favourites on the north island:

  • Bay of Islands: Russels, Wantangi Treaty House
  • Goat Island for snorkeling
  • Coromandel peninsula incl. Stony Bay, Hot Water Beach
  • Raglan: good for surfing and other water sports
  • Waitomo Caves: glowworm caves
  • Rotorua: Geysers, mud pools, hot springs and Maori cultural experiences
  • Auckland surroundings: Waiheke Island (great vineyards), Rangitoto Island (great for a day trip), Auckland museum (fun for younger kids)
  • Wellington: botanical garden, waterfront, Te Papa Museum

South Island: - Picton - Abel Tasman National Park (great tramping and sea kayaking) - Oamaru: penguins - Kaikoura: whale watching - Queenstown: great surroundings, we did the a lot of tramping in this area - Milford Sound

Have a great trip and enjoy NZ!

Greetings, Gerda

To the South Island I'd add Nelson and the surrounding area, and a trip by boat into the Abel Tasman national park if you can do it. We managed to take our 2-year old along for a day trip without too much trouble. There are some nice vineyards in that part of the world too.

Around Auckland, the Zoo is very pleasant and accessible.

Have fun! Someone else also asked the same thing about New Zealand some time ago, I think. You might surf over there and see if you can find the string. Or back your view out to the entire world and search for "New Zealand" and see what everyone has said.
