I've always wondered what is the "average" meal at the US. Here in mexico it's usually rice or soup, and some tacos (of which there are many possible combinations). This is the kind of meal you can order basically anywhere, or the kind of food you can expect to eat if there's nothing fancy to cook at your house. It's there any kind of default food tradition in the US? #food
Good question Arturo! I don't know what's typical, but I can at least tell you what my family eats...here in Seattle, we really try to take advantage of the short summer, which for us, means lots of barbecues! So, hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, etc. When we're not barbecuing, we eat quite a lot of fish - mostly salmon but also halibut. When we go out to restaurants, we tend to go mostly for Thai or Indian food. So, is it typical? I don't know, but that is what my family does :-)
Some sort of meat, vegetable, and starch. Think chicken, rice, and salad or steak and potato.

I think the answer to this question can't really be answered one time for the entire nation, since appetites and delicacies are pretty regional. I grew up in the Southeast, for example, and a typical meal was "meat and three," meaning a meat and three vegetables / starches. In the Northwest (where I now live), however, I find that a typical meal might be much more varied. Perhaps all vegetables, all meat, sushi, etc. Much more eclectic. Not sure how to think about the rest of the nation.
It really depends on the family or person I think. I know my family always has a meat a starch a vegetable and dessert of course lol.
Hi Arturo :) and all else.... I don't think there really is an average meal in this melting pot. I do agree that it depends on individuals and family. Unfortunately, I think that most typical American meals are full of high carb and protein meals... little focus on vegetables, complex carbs or fruits....
That's so interesting that you ask that because I just checked "What I Eat" (Menzel, D'Aluisio) out of the library. This project was to go around the world and look at just this question in many cultures. There are 80 profiles in the book. .. I think it varies so much in the US, like in other countries. It's common to see the "hamburger, fries, soda," I guess. In our house: last night was frozen breaded shrimp and oven-"fried" sweet potato chips. Breakfast is a cereal. Lunch is beans/onion/pepper/tomato mix. Some nights a 2- or 3-egg cheese omelet. We like to grill so maybe chicken satay sometimes. Such a hard-to-answer question!
