Are community gardens common in Great Britain?
Hi Sue yes is the answer to your question.A lot of areas in England Scotland and Wales have underwent a regeneration program in mostly local authority housing schemes, which i am proud to say i grew up in one of them.In order to connect people in the community there is funding to help build community garden projects in which everyone is encouraged to get involved in. But even to this day a tenement block[apartments] which has a communal garden everyone has to take there turn at looking after it.You usually find the older people in the block doing more work than younger ones.Community gardens is a great way to meet the neighbors and it makes people want to look after the area they live in, especially if it used to be a bit run down. Allotments are still a big thing in Scotland where people are growing there own veg etc.It used to be the older generation that had a plot but more and more younger people are getting involved in them. Do you guy's in the States have allotments?
We have some community gardens in the city where I live (Seattle). However, there is sufficient demand to make it difficult to get a plot in one. There are a few other areas that private land owners have offered up, and there seems to be some increase in the use of urban land for larger vegetable gardens. This is what we have attempted to do on our own land.
